WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

In December of 1985, two budding restaurant entrepreneurs came together with a vision- a new place for the people of the Wiregrass to get together and enjoy great food with equally great service at affordable prices. Settling on the foundation of serving steaks and fresh seafood straight from the Gulf, Bill Slavins and Bob Watson began the process of creating The Old Mill.

Mr. Slavins comes from a background working his way up to restaurant management with the national chain Red Lobster and earning his degree from Florida State University's Hotel and Restaurant Administration School of Business, and Mr. Watson successfully opened, owned, and operated the locally famous steakhouse Conestoga in 1977. With their combined 20+ years of experience in pairing quality food with top notch service, the plan for The Old Mill was born.

After searching through the limited land available for sale in the area, the newly formed partners took a chance on a spot next to a community place of worship. Needing the approval of the Dothan City Commission to convert the land to commercial use, the Commission granted their request in April of 1986 and the parcel was purchased July 10th.

Hiring Alfred Saliba Homes, a prominent local construction company, construction began.

Now that it was time to open, the team created a menu with unique offerings for the area. After 35+ years, many of the core elements have stayed the same. Patrons come from all around to enjoy the exclusive house-made steak sauce, made-from-scratch yeast rolls, and melt-in-your-mouth peanut butter pie. The owners decided on fresh food and friendly service as the foundation, and still hold to that today.
